The History of Canon

Canon is a Japanese multinational corporation that specialises in the manufacture of imaging and optical products, including cameras, photocopiers, steppers and computer printers.

Canon started out as an Optical Instruments Laboratory in 1937 out of an office in Tokyo, Japan. The aim of the founders (Goro Yoshida and Saburo Uchida) was to manufacture cameras and take up competition with the existing German manufactures. One of their first produced cameras was called Kwanon, this name was later re-used when the company looked for a more modern and better fitting international name, hence the name Canon.

Canon entered the printer field in 1975 when they successfully developed a laser beam printer. One of the most famous inventions of Canon is the discovery of the Bubble Jet technology. This is one of two used technologies within the inkjet printing field with Epson’s piezoelectric technology being the other one. The Bubble Jet works by using heat which produce pressure that ejects ink on to the paper media.

Today, Canon is one of the largest suppliers within the printer market, offering inkjet printers, laser printers, scanners and dot matrix printers for every use from the home to commercial printing.

The Canon printer product line of today includes the Canon BJ, Canon BJC, Canon I, Canon Pixma and Canon S series.
